Historical Background
On March 1, 1872, Congress established Yellowstone as the first National Park, setting in motion a series of events that led to the founding of the United States National Park Service 44 years later.
The National Park Service was established on August 25, 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, creating a new bureau within the Department of the Interior. At that time, 35 properties were transfered under the authority of the new National Park Service, 12 of which were National Parks. The founding of our National Parks Service set the template that many other nations have followed when establishing National Parks and their governing bodies.
In addition to the National Parks, the National Park Service is responsible for the administration of National Monuments, Historic Sites, Battlefields, National Seashores and more. Presently, the NPS administers more than 400 sites, comprising approximately 84 million acres of national treasures.
This week we're looking at the number of visitors to the US National Parks from 1979 to 2017. If you'd like to see what you can come up with, publish your work to Tableau Public, and Twitter with the hashtag #ThrowbackThursday, tagging @TThrowbackThurs. We'd really love to see what you can come up with!
